Fougerolles lies within the Vôge, a sandstone zone separating the granitic core of the Vosges massif from the calcareous areas of Franche-Comté and Burgundy.
The terrain is rolling, with elevations ranging from 300 metres to 500–550 metres in the historic production heartland, a region rich in forests and springs.
The majority of the cherry orchards are established on so-called 'bigarré' sandstones outcropping at shallow depth, as well as on superficial formations derived from these sandstones (slope colluvium, plateau alterites, and ancient alluvial terrace deposits).
The micro-fissured sandstone nature of these soils allows good development of the root system and provides a constant, well-balanced water reserve throughout the growing cycle of the cherry trees.
Excluded from the potential appellation zone are areas where calcareous formations outcrop, low-lying alluvial floodplain zones, and locations that are excessively cold and present a microclimate incompatible with cherry cultivation.
