Terroir

• In the Landweingebiet Ruwer, Palaeozoic rocks dominate, with Devonian slate occurring almost exclusively, overlain in places by Pleistocene terrace deposits only within the natural landscape unit of the Trierer Talweitung.
• On the Devonian slates, mainly base-poor to base-rich brown earths (Braunerden) developed, while colluvial soils (Kolluvisole) derived from redeposited Devonian soil material are found locally.
• Regosols, Parabraunerden, and pseudogleys formed on the Pleistocene terrace sediments, which are partly covered by loam, but these soil types are of only subordinate importance within the area.
• The vineyard sites lie on the slopes of the Ruwer and its tributary valleys at an average elevation of 225 m above sea level, with an average slope gradient of 27%.
• The vineyards are predominantly oriented SE–S–SW, at approximately 70%, with an average aspect of 209° (SSW) across the vineyard sites of the entire growing area.
• The Ruwer valley, owing to its sheltered position, stands out as a thermally favoured zone relative to the heights of the Hunsrück, with a mean temperature of 9.5 °C and 13.9 °C during the growing season.
