Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils derived from Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, and Keuper (Triassic) define the region; gneiss and mica schist predominate in the west.
- Steillagen on the concave bluff slopes of the Main valley, predominantly south- to west-facing, with a hollow-mirror-like aspect.
- Transitional climate from sub-oceanic to sub-continental; annual rainfall below 550 mm – the driest region in Bayern.
- Continental easterly airflows cause severe winter chilling with hard frosts and late spring frosts.
- Sandy soils from fluvial sediments also occur in the Main valley; Löss deposits on the plateau surfaces.
Human factors
- Fine-grained ownership structure resulting from Realteilung; approximately 20 % Steil- and terraced sites requiring high levels of manual labour.
- Land consolidation has enabled more efficient cultivation of approximately 60 % of the vineyard area, thereby securing the preservation of the Steil- and terraced sites.
Product characteristics
- According to the product specification, the wines display typicity, Mineralität, and individuality according to their specific site.
Terroir / wine link
- Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, Keuper, and mica schist shape the Mineralität and individuality of the wines in a sensorially perceptible way.
Facts drawn from the cahier's terroir-link section (Lien au terroir) by automatic interpretation — see the source.
