The production areas of the PGI Letrines are mainly hilly and lie to the north and west of the town of Pyrgos, with predominantly westerly and southerly aspects.
The vineyard soils have a medium loam texture, a slightly acidic pH, and very low to negligible levels of active calcium.
The climate of the area is classified as maritime Mediterranean, with a mean annual temperature range of 17 to 18 degrees Celsius and mild winters.
Mean annual rainfall in the area ranges from 600 to 800 mm, distributed mainly over the period from October to May.
Human factors
The appellation is linked to the introduction into Greece, in 1870, through the Mercouri Estate, of the Italian red variety Refosco, which subsequently spread throughout this zone.
At the initial recognition of the zone in 1993, the variety Refosco, together with Mavrodaphne, constituted the only permitted varieties for the production of what was then the Letrines Regional Wine.
