Terroir
Natural factors
- Hilly terrain with western and southern exposure, north and west of Pyrgos
- Soils of medium mechanical composition, slightly acidic pH, very low or zero active calcium
- Maritime μεσογειακό κλίμα with mild winters and an annual temperature range of 17–18 °C
- Rainfall of 600–800 mm/year, distributed mainly from October to May (dry summer)
- Summer winds constitute a distinctive factor in the uniqueness of the wines
Human factors
- The variety Refosco was introduced to Greece in 1870 through the Mercouri Estate in the Letrines zone
- At the time of the zone's initial recognition (1993), the only permitted varieties were Refosco and Μαυροδάφνη
