- Gently rolling hills: prevailing mean altitude 300 m a.s.l., maximum peaks of 600–700 m a.s.l.
- Heterogeneous geology with a predominance of calcareous-argillaceous scisti; clay-loam and silt-loam soils, alkaline reaction, rocky substrate frequently outcropping.
- Hilly zone to the south-west of the province of Siena, on either side of the Orcia river basin, between the areas of Montepulciano and Montalcino.
