Natural factors
- North–south plateau (120–250 m), bounded to the north by 50 km of Channel coastline, between the mouth of the Orne and the Seine estuary
- Western boundary marked by a cuesta separating the calcareous plains (Bathonian/Bajocian) from the clay soils of the Pays d'Auge (Callovian)
- Orchard soils over clay-with-flints and Cenomanian or Oxfordian chalk, on slopes with good drainage
- Mild oceanic climate: mean annual temperature 10.3 °C, range 4–18 °C, rainfall 700–850 mm, very moderate summer water deficit
