Terroir
Natural factors
- The Haardtrand and the Vorderpfälzer Tiefland belong structurally to the Upper Rhine Graben, a tectonic rift valley oriented in a NNE–SSW direction.
- A large proportion of the vines grow on loess or loess-loam, in which para-brown earths (Parabraunerden), chernozems, or para-rendzinas have developed.
- Tertiary limestones and marls rank third by area, while vineyard sites on Rotliegend and Buntsandstein sandstones are only sparsely distributed.
- More exotic rock types include limestones, marls, and dolomites of the Muschelkalk, Keuper, and Jurassic periods, along with isolated occurrences of Rotliegend and Tertiary volcanics as well as rocks of the Early Palaeozoic.
- The mean annual temperature is approximately 10 °C, with values increasing from west at the Haardtrand to east toward the Rhine plain, and annual precipitation stands at around 655 mm.
