Terroir

• In the Posavje wine region, climatic conditions for vine growing are most favourable in the Bela krajina wine-growing district, somewhat less favourable in the Bizeljsko-Sremič district, and least favourable in the Dolenjska district.
• The average sum of effective temperatures during the growing season in the Posavje wine region ranges from 1,118.3 °C in Dolenjska to 1,287.4 °C in Bela krajina, with an overall average of 1,208.4 °C, which would place the district in Zone A.
• The two defining characteristics of this area are its exceptionally diverse geological composition and the influence of a sub-Pannonian climate, which diminishes from east to west.
• Viticulture is practiced mainly on the slopes of hills and ridges, the summits of which are generally covered with forest, with the gradient of the slopes mostly allowing for vertical vineyard layouts.
• Due to soil erosion, vineyards are nowadays typically grassed over shortly after planting, while in cases of particularly intense water erosion, vines are sometimes also planted on terraces.
