Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyards at 100–500 m elevation on the slopes of a mountain reaching 1,100 m, with views toward the sea.
- Rainfall of ~550 mm in Sotiras (the principal αμπελουργική ζώνη), lower in the south and higher in the north of the island.
- Dense coniferous forest surrounds the vineyards and balances the water budget, allowing for an earlier harvest.
Human factors
- The oldest Greek legislative text on wine: a stele recording fines for violations of laws concerning wine and vinegar, 480–460 BC.
Terroir / wine link
- A mild maritime climate, cool easterly winds, and dense coniferous forest collectively shape the character of the grape.
