Terroir
Natural factors
- The Vicomté d'Aumelas vineyard extends across hills set against the northern face of the Aumelas plateau, overlooking the Hérault river to the north, between Montpellier and Béziers and north of Sète.
- The Vicomté d'Aumelas vineyard is laid out in terraces stepping down toward the west, on soils formed over calcareous and marly-calcareous gravels from the Secondary and Tertiary eras, supplemented in the lower sections by varied deposits brought down into the Hérault valley.
- The soils cover a wide range of viticultural aptitudes, from fertile alluvial and colluvial soils of recent origin to the sandy-gravelly soils of ancient alluvial terraces and calcareous hillsides.
- The climate is strictly Mediterranean in character, with a very pronounced summer rainfall deficit.
- The production area falls entirely within the zone known as the Moyenne Vallée de l'Hérault, and its landscape reinforces a sense of unity within the diversity of the territory.
