Terroir

• The zone falls in the west-central part of Sardinia and encompasses upland areas formed by rocks of the Sardinian Oligo-Miocene volcanic-sedimentary complex to the north and east.
• The erosion of these uplands by weathering agents and watercourses — foremost among them the Tirso — has filled the tectonic depression of the northern Campidano with thick detrital-alluvial deposits, often terraced, which today form the plain of the Oristano area.
• The alluvial soils closest to the bed of the Tirso are known as 'Bennaxi': deep, cool, and silty-sandy in texture, while the older soils called 'Gregori' have a cobbly matrix mixed with tenacious clay and present drainage difficulties.
• In the Sinis area, carbonate-rich soils are found, while in the low-lying, hydromorphic zones close to the sea, soils classified as aquents and salorthids are present.
• The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cold, rainy winters, mean temperatures between 15 and 17 °C, and summer maxima exceeding 35 °C.
• Mean annual rainfall is around 650 mm, with minima in July and August and maxima in December and February, while the prevailing winds come from the north-west and west.

• The Sangiovese variety is understood to have arrived in Sardinia in the early 1930s, when vineyards were planted on reclaimed coastal dune sands in the Arborea area following the draining of the Sassu lagoon.
• The Trebbiano variety was introduced to Sardinia alongside Sangiovese, and the Arborea wine is produced exclusively from grapes of these two varieties grown within the defined geographical area.

• The growing environment, characterised by hot, dry summers and cold, rainy winters, allows the grapes to ripen slowly and fully, contributing significantly to the distinctive organoleptic character of the Arborea wine.
