The geographical area lies on the Armorican Massif and extends over the departments of the Brittany region as well as part of Mayenne, Loire-Atlantique and Maine-et-Loire.
The oceanic climate shows fairly small minimum–maximum variations, a marked maritime influence and abundant, regular rainfall, with mild summers and winters that are not very harsh.
The geographical area is characterised by the absence of summer water deficit and by few days of frost, conditions favourable to the growth of apple trees but not very suited to viticulture.
Human factors
Apple growing is attested as early as the 10th century in the Clohars-Carnoët area near Quimperlé, and the cider-apple orchard was established as early as the Middle Ages using varieties brought from Spain (Biscay).
