Terroir

• The substrate is composed mainly of Triassic variegated marls and clays, interspersed with sandstone and dolomitic beds, within which the vigorous hillside slopes are carved.
• The plateaus and summit ridges are formed by a substantial bed of Rhaetian sandstone, and Liassic limestones outcrop to the north-east of the zone, overlying these sandstones.
• Soils are generally clayey and acidic, with a stony surface layer due to the abundance of sandstone fragments and dolomite slabs, and locally sandier where sandstone beds outcrop in the upper parts of the slopes.
• The region benefits from a cool oceanic climate bearing a marked continental influence, with wide temperature ranges around an annual mean of 10.5 °C and warm, humid summers.
• The zone is hilly and drained by the Amance and the Apance, small rivers that are tributaries of the Saône, while the Meuse has its source on the plateau to the north of the zone.
