Terroir
Natural factors
- Argillaceous-limestone soils over lower and upper Bathonian bedrock, in three types: stony 'petites terres', clayey ochre soils, and finely structured 'blanchées'.
- The vineyard is sheltered from westerly winds by a line of wooded plateaux, resulting in lower rainfall and more sunshine than the rest of the département.
- Continental climate with oceanic and Loire-valley influences: cool, wet springs, a dry and sunny September, and cool summer nights.
- South-facing slopes of the Yonne tributary valleys and isolated outlier hills (with east-, south-, and west-facing aspects) define the topography of the vineyard area.
