Terroir
Natural factors
- The Landweingebiet Saar lies largely within the natural landscape unit of the Saarburger Saartal and extends eastward into the steeply sloping natural landscape unit of the Irsch-Wiltinger Hunsrückrand, which still features vineyard land in places.
- The vineyard sites along the Saar are situated at elevations of approximately 135 to 380 metres above sea level, with an average of 230 metres above sea level, and an average slope gradient of 23 percent.
- Palaeozoic Devonian-age argillaceous schists dominate the Landweingebiet Saar, on which predominantly base-poor to base-rich brown earths have developed.
- In the far west, Mesozoic sandstones of the Buntsandstein occur, on which virtually no viticulture is practised; their base-poor brown earths account for less than 0.5 percent of the vineyard area.
- The valley of the Saar and its side valleys stand out from the heights of the Hunsrück as thermally favoured, sheltered sites, with an average temperature of approximately 9.5 degrees Celsius and 14.0 degrees Celsius during the growing season.
