Terroir

• The wine region (Anbaugebiet) extends across the area between Lake Constance, the High Rhine, the Upper Rhine Graben, the Bergstraße, and Tauberfranken, and is considered the southernmost German wine region.
• The vineyard sites lie at elevations ranging from approximately 115 m above sea level to 520 m above sea level, with slope gradients of up to around 60% in the river valleys and at the higher-elevation sites of the Black Forest foothills (Vorbergzone).
• Along the Upper Rhine, at the Tuniberg, and in the Kaiserstuhl, the vineyard sites are predominantly situated on terraces of varying size.
• Viticulture takes place mainly on soils derived from the weathering of granite, gneiss, Muschelkalk, or volcanic rock, largely overlain by loess deposits of varying thickness.
• The Freiburg im Breisgau site records a mean annual temperature of 10.8 °C, a precipitation of 955 l/m², and 1,740 hours of sunshine per year, characterised by an alternation of dry, hot periods with warm, humid spells.

• The alternation of dry, hot weather periods with predominantly warm, humid conditions defines the character of Landwein Oberrhein, and the high ripeness of the grapes also gives rise to off-dry and sweet wines.
