Minho
Terroir
Natural factors
- Average annual rainfall of 1,200 mm, concentrated in winter and spring; mild temperatures throughout the year.
- Irregular topography with a dense network of river valleys, becoming more pronounced from the coast toward the interior.
- Predominantly granito soils; two xisto belts running SE–NW — one Silurian (with Carboniferous formations and slate), the other of archaic xistos.
- Shallow and heterogeneous soils; viticulture favours moderately deep soils with good internal drainage.
Terroir / wine link
- Dominant granito soils, with xisto belts (Silurian and archaic), account for the shallow depth and heterogeneity that selects the best viticultural terrains.
