Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils derived from Devonian sandstones, clay slates, and quartzites, as well as metamorphic rocks (greenschist, phyllite), are the oldest in the region.
- Rotliegend rocks dominate in terms of surface area, including volcanic latites, andesites, and basalts.
- Over 180 soil variants have been identified in the region — the greatest soil diversity of any German wine region. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Mean annual temperature 9.3 °C; growing-season mean 13.8 °C; average annual rainfall 580 mm (60% falling during the growing season).
- Steep and very steep sites (Steillage and Steilstlage) are found notably at the Rotenfels (Bad Münster am Stein) and at the Steinberg (Niederhausen), with an average slope gradient of 12.5%.
Human factors
- Viticulture along the Nahe dates back to Roman times; the independent Anbaugebiet has existed only since 1971.
Product characteristics
- Prädikat wines can achieve a more concentrated composition of grape constituents through leaf removal or bunch thinning.
Terroir / wine link
- The diverse soil profiles shape the grapes in distinctly different ways, offering consumers a broad spectrum of aromas.
