Terroir
Natural factors
- In the south-east of the area, glacially thrust formations from the last ice age are found, consisting mainly of coarse and fine river sands that are often gravel-rich, as in 't Gooi.
- Around Amsterdam, peat deposits on clay are found scattered as a soil type.
- Along the coast there are dune deposits of sand, within which there is generally a strip of marine sand mixed with clay or peat, known as the geestgronden.
- On the island of Texel, soil types include not only dune sand but also marine clay deposits and sand with clay loam.
- The climate has an average annual rainfall of 868 mm, 1,707 sunshine hours per year, and a mean annual temperature of 10.1°C, rising to 16.6°C in summer.
Terroir / wine link
- The climate allows the stated yields and ripeness levels to be achieved, resulting in a fresh, full-fruited wine with green notes and red fruit in the red wine.
