Terroir

• The Atalanti valley is bounded to the north by Mount Knimida, to the south by Mount Chlomo, to the west by Parnassus, and to the east by the northern Evoikos Gulf.
• Cool air currents descending from Parnassus toward the sea assist in the ripening of the grapes and in preserving their natural acidity.
• Vineyard elevations range from 30 to 350 metres, and the vineyards are situated on soils suited to viticulture, where the cultivation practices customary to the area are applied.
• The climate of the region is Mediterranean, cool in the upland areas, while on the coast it is mild in winter and cool in summer, with a mean annual temperature of 16.5 °C and mean annual rainfall of 570 mm.
• The vineyard soils have moderate organic matter content, moderately alkaline pH values, and relatively high levels of calcium carbonate and clay.

• Phylloxera, advancing steadily southward, appeared to bring a centuries-old tradition to an end, and by 1971 only 367 stremma remained, divided among 233 owners, cultivated mainly for personal consumption.
• From 1973 onwards, replanting of the area began with an initial cultivation of approximately 90 stremma at the Kalliari Plain, which expanded gradually to reach approximately 2,200 stremma today.

• The distinctiveness of the PGI Opountia Lokridos wines is attributable to the particular characteristics of the area — including its soils, climate, and the influence of winds during the summer — in combination with the grape varieties cultivated and the viticultural practices employed.
