Terroir
Natural factors
- The relief reaches its highest point at Mont-Ventoux, at 1,909 metres in the north/north-east of the department, forming part of a ridge line oriented west to east.
- The department encompasses two distinct major geological domains: the Rhône corridor, made up of plains, and sub-Alpine Provence, characterised by upland reliefs such as Mont-Ventoux, the Montagne de Lure, the plateaux of Albion and Saint-Christol, the Monts de Vaucluse, and the Luberon massif.
- The Rhône corridor is highly exposed to wind owing to the Mistral, and is dominated by recent and ancient alluvial deposits from the Rhône, the lower Durance, and their tributaries — the Lez, the Aigues, the Ouvèze, the Sorgues, and the Calavon.
- The sub-Alpine domain consists principally of a very thick succession of limestones, one particular facies of which — the Urgonian limestones — plays a major role in the morphology, tectonics, and hydrogeology of the area.
- The Mistral is a cold, dry wind from the north, with gusts that regularly approach 100 km/h, and it plays an important role in the climate of the department.
- The department is subject to the influence of three of France's four major climate types: Mediterranean in the south, mountain in the north-east, and a relative influence of semi-continental climate in the north-west.
