Terroir
Natural factors
- Soil: deep-layered, loess-sandy, low-limestone, high water-retention – Pannonian marine clayey-sandy sediment.
- Topography: south-south-westerly hill ranges, 105–300 m a.s.l., a ~50 km-long production area along the southern shore of Lake Balaton.
- Climate: the balatoni mikroklíma moderates continental extremes; the risk of early frosts is low, and spring bud-break is late.
- Precipitation and sunshine: 623 mm annually (351 mm during the growing season), 2,000 sunshine hours per year, mean temperature 10.6 °C.
- Wind regime: a prevailing N–NW wind blowing off the surface of Lake Balaton cools and ventilates the vineyards of the southern shore.
Human factors
- Szürkebarát and Olaszrizling became established after phylloxera; in recent decades the share of aromatic varieties and red-wine varieties has increased.
Product characteristics
- White, rosé, and red wines alike are characterised by pronounced fruitiness and an elegant acid structure.
- In quality Pezsgő, extended ageing imparts biscuity, autolytic, and buttery flavour notes while freshness is retained.
Terroir / wine link
- Loess-sandy, low-limestone soil combined with the tempering influence of Lake Balaton yields elegant acid structure and fruity aromas in the wine.
