Terroir
Natural factors
- The vineyard sites lie on stony, weakly clayey loam and sandy loamy gravel soils formed from weathered gravel deposits of the former freshwater Molasse during the ice ages.
- The gravelly soils drain very well and quickly, which proves a particular advantage for managing the vineyard sites given the high rainfall levels.
- The landscape is defined by moraine ridges along Lake Constance and the areas behind them, strewn with drumlins from the last Würm glaciation, which give the terrain its rolling character and provide the slope gradients and southerly exposures required for quality-oriented viticulture.
- Lake Constance creates a continuous exchange of warmth through the differential heating of water and land, with lake breezes by day and land breezes by night, its average temperature running some 2 degrees Celsius above the surrounding air temperature.
- The alpine Föhn is amplified by the shape of the opposing Upper Rhine valley, which acts as a Föhn channel, resulting in accelerated warming of the Lake Constance water and rapid drying of the vines, with annual precipitation of up to 1,200 mm.
