- Moderately developed soils classified as Inceptisols (Soil Survey Staff, 2010), with medium or medium-fine texture.
- Long-term average annual rainfall of 897.54 mm; over the most recent decade 1991–2010 the average rose to 937.1 mm, with an increase concentrated in the winter months.
Human factors
- Viticulture in this area has Etruscan origins, with historical roots reaching back to pre-Roman times.
- As early as the first years of the twentieth century, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon of Alsatian provenance were introduced as blending improvers for Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Ciliegiolo.
