Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils developed over slates and schists, stony, with an A(B)C profile, pH 6, and a mull-type organic horizon of 20–25 cm.
- Palaeozoic and Precambrian materials rank among the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula; Precambrian slates predominate.
- The foehn effect generated by the Cantabrian Mountains produces dry, superheated winds, creating a unique microclimate within Asturias.
- Continentalized Mediterranean climate: winters down to −10 °C, summers above 30 °C, precipitation approximately 1,000 mm (30% less than in Asturias).
- Highly rugged relief with steep to precipitous slopes; the narrow valleys of the Narcea and the Navia rivers form the principal fluvial axes.
Human factors
- Vine cultivation has been documented since the 9th century; its expansion accelerated with the founding of the Benedictine monastery of Corias in 1031/1032.
- All vineyard work is carried out by hand and by traditional craft methods due to the terrain; four indigenous varieties—Albarín Tinto, Carrasquín, Verdejo Negro, and Albarín Blanco—are exclusive to Asturias.
Product characteristics
- Reds: bright cherry colour of low to medium intensity, aromas of wild red fruits, forest undergrowth, and slate; fresh and lightly tannic on the palate.
- Whites: pale yellow with greenish highlights, terpenic aromas of fruit and white flowers; fruity and slightly full on the palate, with citrus and mineral nuances.
Terroir / wine link
- Slate soils contribute mineral reminiscences to the red wine and mineral touches to the white, directly reflecting the terroir.
