Terroir
Natural factors
- The soils of the area derive from two main geological units, sedimentary and volcanic, with Pliocene and Lower Pleistocene marine sediments in the Tiber valley and tuffs generated by the Cimino volcanic complex.
- The explosive activity of the Cimino volcanism spread ashes and lapilli, giving rise to pyroclastic rocks that were deposited over the clays and marine sands of the Tiber valley.
- The vineyards are cultivated at an altitude ranging from 33 to 500 metres above sea level, with variable slopes and a general aspect oriented towards the west and south-west.
- The climate is temperate-transitional, with mean annual rainfall of between 954 and 1,166 mm and a summer dry period that is not particularly pronounced, with 103–163 mm of rain falling in July and August.
- The mean temperature of the area is 14.2 °C, with an intense cold period extending from October to May and a mean minimum temperature in the coldest month below 0 °C, recorded at 0.3 °C.
Human factors
- Moroni, in his Dizionario di erudizione storico-ecclesiastica of 1860, records that in Carbognano wine was kept in cool caves (grotte) both within and outside the village.
- Viticulture in Lazio, begun by the Etruscans, was subsequently expanded by the Romans and continued to develop under the Papal States.
- The records of the 1883 inquiry into the condition of the agricultural class list Bello, Greco, Moscatello, Petino, Procanico, Romanesco, and Rossetto as the most widely cultivated white varieties, and Aleatico, Cannaiola, Porcina, and Prugnolo as the red varieties.
