Natural factors
- The geographic zone is limited to the single commune of Cornas (Ardèche), on the right bank of the Rhône, opposite Valence.
- Soils derived from the porphyritic granites of Tournon (primary eruptive rocks), cultivated on steep slopes on small terraces with dry-stone retaining walls.
- Moderate rainfall (~430 mm/year) with late-summer rain events due to the Cévenol effect; the Mistral blows frequently along the Rhône corridor. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- Very deep colour, garnet to almost black, evolving toward amber tones with age.
- Powerful, full-bodied wines that reach their peak after extended cellaring; renowned for their ability to age 18 to 20 years in the cellar.
