The zone lies in the Auxois natural region, between the granite massif of the Morvan to the west and the limestone plateaus of the « Seuil de Bourgogne » to the east.
The substrate of the slopes and plains consists of formations that are mainly clay-based interspersed with limestone bands, the whole dated to the Liassic (Lower Jurassic).
The uppermost ledges of the hills are formed by the « Calcaire à entroques » of the Bajocian (Middle Jurassic), sometimes forming cliffs that enrich the slopes with scree.
The region is drained by small rivers flowing northwest toward the Paris Basin, including the Armançon and the Serein, both tributaries of the Yonne.
Average annual rainfall is around 750 millimetres, moderate and regular, with no marked summer drought, for an average annual temperature of 10.5 °C.
