- Predominantly granitic soils — non-humic brown litholic soils — with Mediterranean non-humic brown xisto outcrops.
- A region enclosed by four mountain ranges — Caramulo, Buçaco, Nave, and Estrela — which block Atlantic moisture and continental winds.
- The mountain ranges act as a double barrier: against humid air masses from the coast and against harsh continental winds.
- Temperate climate with cold, rainy winters and very hot, dry summers — a markedly continental diurnal and seasonal temperature range.
- A rigid hydrographic network shaped by the granitic massif; the Dão and Mondego rivers run in broad parallelism.
