Terroir
Natural factors
- Apennine relief with highly varied sedimentary lithotypes: arenaria, argille, limestone, gypsum, sands, and conglomerates.
- Alluvial plain between 2 and 70 m a.s.l.; sediments derived from Apennine rivers and the Po (meandering plain and deltaic plain).
- Ferrara: deltaic soils with elevations below sea level and shallow hydromorphism; the ideal environment for the Fortana variety.
Human factors
- Pier de Crescenzi (1300) lists around thirty Emilian varieties, including Trebbiano, Grechetto gentile, and the lambrusche.
Product characteristics
- Plain wines are fresh and easy-drinking; hillside wines are more structured, elegant, and persistent on the nose and palate.
- Lambruschi, Fogarina, and Fortana are typically sparkling, with the right acidity and aromatic character; whites show adequate levels of acidity, including malic acidity.
Terroir / wine link
- The plain, with a heat summation of up to 2,400 Winkler degree-days, favours the Lambruschi; the hills produce more structured and persistent wines.
