Terroir
Natural factors
- Temperate-continental climate with attenuated Mediterranean influences; mean annual temperature 11.3 °C, precipitation 642 mm, sunshine 1,520 hours over the growing season.
- Parent rock: alternating Tertiary clays, marne, and sands on slopes and ridges; alluvial deposits of varying texture in the Olt River floodplain.
- Dominant soils: albic luvisols, brown luvic soils (podzolised), argillo-illuvial brown soils on hillsides; brun-roșcat soils on the terraces in the southern part of the podgorie.
- Topography: interfluvial ridges with steep N–S-oriented slopes running parallel to the Olt River; elevations ranging from 193 m (south) to 463 m (north).
- Above 400 m elevation, brown and brun-roșcat forest soils, moderately podzolised, calcareous-rich, developed over alluvial gravels.
Human factors
- Pre-phylloxera indigenous varieties: Crâmpoșie, Braghină, and Gordan, legendarily associated with the Geto-Dacian era and the reign of Burebista.
- Documentary records dating from the 16th–17th centuries, linked to vineyard donations made by Mihai Viteazul to monasteries.
Product characteristics
- Aromatic wines from Tămâioasă Românească and Sauvignon are recognised for their exceptional quality across the hillsides of the podgorie.
- Historic Drăgășani wines were low in alcohol (~10% vol), displayed freshness from residual CO₂, and had a lightly tart character, produced from late-harvested grapes.
Terroir / wine link
- Brown luvic soils combined with the local thermo-hydric conditions directly inform the variety recommendations for white wines (Sauvignon, Crâmpoșie Selecționată, Tămâioasă Românească) and red wines (Negru de Drăgășani, Novac, Pinot Noir).
