Terroir
Natural factors
- Predominantly xisto soils with granitic patches, in the deep valleys of north-eastern Portugal, within the Douro basin.
- The Serra do Marão and Serra de Montemuro act as barriers to moist westerly winds, creating a continental climate of hot, dry summers.
- The north bank of the Douro is exposed to dry southerly winds; the south bank faces cooler, more humid northerly winds with lower sunshine hours.
- Mean annual temperatures range from 11.8 to 16.5 °C, with the highest values along the Douro and its tributaries, particularly on the right bank.
Human factors
- Before phylloxera (1862), vines were trained in narrow 'geios' with 1–2 rows; after the blight, wider terraces were planted at approximately 6,000 vines/ha.
- Red winemaking involves curtimenta (fermentation with solid grape components); whites are made by 'bica aberta' (free-run must, without solids).
Product characteristics
- Vinho Duriense must display refined aroma and palate; reds are fermented with curtimenta to fix pigments and tannins.
