Terroir
Natural factors
- The Douro region extends across a total area of 250,000 ha, divided into three naturally distinct sub-regions.
- Vineyards intended for the production of wine with the Duriense geographical indication must be planted predominantly on soils of schistous origin, without excluding patches of granitic soils.
- The Marão and Montemuro mountain ranges exert a strong influence on the region, acting as a barrier against the penetration of humid westerly winds.
- The northern bank of the Douro river is under the influence of dry southerly winds, while the southern bank is exposed to cooler and more humid northerly winds and receives lower sunshine hours.
- Mean annual temperatures in the region range between 11.8 and 16.5°C, with diurnal and annual thermal ranges reaching their highest values at Barca d'Alva and their lowest at Fontelo, owing to differences in distance from the sea.
Human factors
- The phylloxera crisis, a blight that appeared in the region for the first time in 1862, marks a historic turning point; the small pre-phylloxera terraces (geios) are today referred to as mortórios following their abandonment.
- In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the system of horizontal bench terraces with earthen embankments emerged as one of the land-training methods introduced by the mechanisation of the region.
Product characteristics
- For white wines, the free-run method (bica aberta) is frequently used, whereby the must ferments separated from the solid parts of the bunch, while for reds fermentation takes place with skin contact in order to preserve the pigments and tannins of the grapes.
- Wines and sparkling wines with the Duriense geographical indication, whether red, white, or rosé, display organoleptic characteristics of good quality, with refined aromas and a refined palate.
