Terroir
Natural factors
- Flat territory facing the Adriatic, with a temperate climate: average annual temperature 13–14 °C.
- The bora wind (ENE direction) sweeps across the low plain, reducing humidity build-up during various periods of the year.
- Predominantly clayey soils with a variable sandy component, formed by alluvial processes with mineral detritus of varying composition.
- The proximity of the sea moderates winter temperatures: sub-zero frosts occur only during brief periods of the year.
- Hot summers with average temperatures above 20 °C and limited nocturnal temperature variation; summer drought is well tolerated owing to the nature of the soils.
Human factors
- Vineyards trained predominantly to guyot, with residual presence of Sylvoz and the 'cappuccina' system (double inverted cane).
- The bora (ENE) dries out humidity build-up; the alluvial argillo-sabbiosi soils cover approximately 400 planted hectares (67% red varieties, 33% white varieties).
Product characteristics
- The sandy-clay alluvial soils, rich in mineral salts, impart a distinctive aroma to the wines, giving them unmistakable characteristics.
- White vinification takes place without maceration, or with only brief skin contact, preserving the aromatic clarity of the white varietals.
