Terroir
Natural factors
- The bedrock is Eocene fliš (carbonate rock), on which deep loamy to loamy-clay soils have developed, with rendzina and brown saturated soils.
- Transitional climate: Mediterranean influences from the west meet continental ones; the ridge of Sabotin to the north moderates the bora.
- Most vineyards are on terraces in hilly terrain; vines are hand-tended and each cluster is turned twice before harvest to maximise sun exposure.
- Low rainfall and high temperatures (up to 37 °C) during ripening bring grapes to 20–25 Brix sugar levels; acidity drops to 3.5–6.5 g/l.
- There is a risk of spring frosts through May; Brda has the highest incidence of hail across the entire Primorska region.
Human factors
- Vines are tended entirely by hand: each cluster is turned twice before harvest to ensure maximum sun exposure.
- The varieties Rebula and Chardonnay are dried after harvest on straw or in wooden crates until December/January for the production of wines from dried grapes.
Product characteristics
- The wines are harmonious, with higher alcohol, lower acidity (3.5–6.5 g/l), and rich minerality with high extract — a result of fliš soils and the Mediterranean climate.
