Natural factors

Soil type: calcareous drift sand over a lösz base (humic and blown sand), with smaller proportions of barna erdőtalaj and csernozjom.
Kontinentális klíma: hot summers, cold winters, mean annual temperature of 11–12 °C, 2,000+ sunshine hours, and 450–500 mm of precipitation.
The sandy soil warms quickly and reflects solar radiation; the lösz subsoil retains nutrients and moisture, while the calcareous subsoil imparts mineral character to the wines.
A sub-Mediterranean influence is also present; spring and autumn frosts are common due to the low elevation above sea level.

Human factors

Swabian settlement revitalised the borvidék; in 1904 a secondary-level viticultural and oenological school was established in Baja.
Traditional varieties: Ezerjó, Kadarka, Kövidinka, Mézes; after World War II, Kékfrankos and Olaszrizling appeared, followed by Chardonnay and Cabernet.

Product characteristics

White and rosé wines: intense aromatics, rich in flavour compounds; reds: fruit-forward, deeply coloured, firm tannins, and slow development.
Premium wines: complex bouquet with notes of dried fruit, jam and spice, enriched by the aromas of barrel and bottle ageing.

Terroir / wine link

The nutrient- and moisture-retaining capacity of the lösz subsoil imparts distinctive substance to the grapes, while the calcareous subsoil lends mineral notes to the wine.
