Terroir

• The vineyards are situated in the sub-Balkan lowland, enclosed by the massive mountain elevations of Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) and Sredna Gora to the north and south.
• The average altitude of the vineyard area ranges from 300 to 450 metres above sea level.
• The climate is moderately continental, with a cumulative temperature sum for the April–October period of 3,500 to 3,600°C and a mean daily temperature in the warmest month of 22–23°C.
• The total annual rainfall in the area is approximately 640 mm.
• The soil types are cinnamon forest soils, slightly eroded, light to medium sandy, and alluvial-meadow soils of moderate depth, with both types containing gravelly deposits in places.

• The grape varieties authorised for the production of wine under the protected designation of origin Karlovo include Cherven Misket and Traminer for white wines, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for red wines and rosé.
• The vine-training systems used are Umbrella, Moser, and medium-trunk double-arm cordon, with mixed and short pruning and a bud load of up to 54 buds per vine.

• The white wines display a golden colour with greenish hues, an aroma with notes of apple and aromatic herbs, and a well-balanced, fresh palate.
• The red wines are deeply coloured, with characteristic fruity aromas of red fruits and a full, fresh, and soft palate.

• The characteristic climate of the area, shaped by the proximity of Stara Planina and Sredna Gora, the presence of air currents flowing mainly from west to east, as well as the cinnamon forest and alluvial-meadow soils with gravelly deposits, are the prerequisite for the production of wines with distinctive aromatic and flavour qualities.
