Terroir

• The Kras plateau lies between the Gulf of Trieste, Vipavska dolina, and the Brkini hills, with an average elevation of 300 m, dropping to 200–250 m near the village of Komen.
• The soil is terra rossa (locally called jerina), lying on a limestone bedrock, and in part on Eocene limestones.
• The geological substrate consists of platy strata with fossil remains belonging to Early Cretaceous limestones, and rudist-bearing strata also belonging to Early Cretaceous limestones.
• Kras has no watercourses, as rainwater immediately drains into the eroded, permeable limestone bedrock; annual rainfall increases toward the north and northwest, averaging between 1,417 and 1,638 mm.
• The Kras appellation is divided into two sub-appellations, Kraška planota and Vrhe; the climate is characterised by warm summers with heavy showers and dry, cold winters, with a pronounced influence of the Bora.

• The traditional direct sale of wine at the producer's premises, known as osmica, is limited to a maximum of eight days per opening period at the facility where the wine is stored and tended.
• Alongside the osmica, farm tourism operations are also developing on estates, offering guests food and wine of the producer's own growing and making, thereby linking winemaking with tourism.

• The wine Kraški Teran PTP is produced on Kras from the Refošk variety, a late-ripening cultivar that requires a Huglin Index value above 1,900.
