Terroir
Natural factors
- The Kocher and Jagst, tributaries of the Neckar, have cut deeply into the Muschelkalk of the Hohenlohe Plain, and the stony, fossil-rich soils are most prominent on the steep vineyard slopes along these rivers.
- The remainder of the Hohenlohe wine country is characterised by the reddish, nutrient-rich marls of the Keuper formation, while skeletal Muschelkalk soils occur along the rivers.
- The Neckar has changed course several times and forms the main artery of the Württemberg wine region, with sun-warmed, shallow, skeletal steep slopes in Muschelkalk.
- Deep loess soils on the valley flanks and higher-lying plains, as well as soils on gypsum Keuper, are also used for viticulture.
- A small area on Lake Constance around Kressbronn is likewise part of the delimited zone, where the vineyard plots lie at 400 to 500 metres above sea level and receive 1,000 to 1,050 mm of rainfall.
- The northernmost sub-zone, Kocher-Jagst-Tauber, benefits especially from the southerly aspect of its vineyards, while the rougher climate that predominates in autumn favours primarily early-ripening white grape varieties.
Product characteristics
- Varied soils, terraced steep sites, and a climate that allows even late-ripening varieties to reach maturity, alongside harsher climatic conditions, define this regional-wine zone, producing wines that, thanks to high ripeness levels, may also be off-dry or sweet.
