Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils formed on Pliocene sediments resting on a Paleozoic crystalline basement, with Miocene conglomeratic outcrops and varicolored argille.
- Climate ranging from subhumid to subarid: rainfall concentrated in autumn and winter, peaking in October and at its lowest in June; pronounced summer water deficit.
- On the hilly relief, sandy or conglomeratic formations dominate, with moderately shallow soils and signs of hydromorphia within 50 cm.
- On the ancient fluvial terrace surfaces: moderately deep soils, medium texture, sub-acid reaction, with an argillic accumulation horizon.
- The hilly belt slopes down from the foothills of the Sila Grande toward the Ionian Sea, around the Lipuda river.
Human factors
- Milo of Crotone, six-time Olympic champion, is cited as an enthusiastic consumer of Kremisa, the forerunner of Cirò.
Terroir / wine link
- Pliocene sediments overlying a Paleozoic crystalline basement, with sandy or conglomeratic hillside soils of moderate depth, lend pedological diversity to the zone.
