Terroir

• The DOC territory lies on the border between Lombardy and Veneto, on Lake Garda, encompassing Sirmione and portions of Desenzano, Lonato, Pozzolengo, and Peschiera del Garda.
• The territory originates in the glacial period of the Quaternary, when a glacier advancing from the Adige valley occupied the Lake Garda basin, subsequently forming the morainic hills.
• The morainic debris, locally known as «menadel», was reworked by the post-glacial lake whose waters submerged the region, depositing lacustrine clay that mixed with the debris and rendered the soil compact.
• The Lugana terroir is predominantly flat, with layered clay-matrix soils of morainic origin and sedimentary nature, mainly calcareous and rich in mineral salts, which gradually become sandier toward the more hilly areas.
• The microclimate of the zone is positively influenced by the temperate breezes of Lake Garda, resulting in mildness and a limited day-to-night temperature range.

• The production regulations were approved by Presidential Decree on 21 July 1967, making this the first DOC recognition of the Lombardy region.
• The area has been cultivated since time immemorial with Turbiana, an indigenous variety also known as Trebbiano di Lugana, with a minimum of 90% required by the regulations plus up to 10% of other authorised white-berry varieties from the provinces of Brescia and Verona.

• The base Lugana displays a straw-yellow or greenish colour tending toward a lightly golden yellow with ageing, with a fresh, soft, and harmonious palate and a lightly fruity character.
• The Lugana Riserva shows deeper colour tones with more evolved and complex aromas, smoky flint notes and balsamic nuances, with a warm, enveloping, savoury, and persistent minerality on the palate.
