Terroir
Natural factors
- The coastal climate is μεσογειακό κλίμα, while moving inland it becomes ηπειρωτικό κλίμα due to the mountain ranges.
- The terrain is 39.4% mountainous, 25.9% semi-mountainous, and 34.7% lowland; plateaus between mountain ranges dominate in the west.
- Soils for dried-grape/liqueur wines: stony, medium-to-heavy texture, alkaline, at elevations above 680 m with southern exposure.
- Summer temperatures are moderated by altitude and northerly winds, favouring the accumulation of sugars.
- Forests cover more than 25% of the land surface, while rivers and cool breezes are natural features that favour viticulture.
Human factors
- Recognition as a protected designation of origin dates to 1932, by Joint Ministerial Decision 110822/16.9.1932 (Government Gazette 87/B/20.9.1932).
- Phylloxera first struck the vineyards of Pylaia (1898) and spread through Μακεδονία with devastating consequences.
Product characteristics
- Dried-grape wines display a complex structure of dried and sweet fruits with considerable ageing potential.
- Extended sunshine accumulates sugars and aromatic compounds in the grapes, imparting character to liqueur-style and Λιαστός οίνος wines.
Terroir / wine link
- Soil, mild climate, cool breezes, forests, and rivers are directly linked to the character of the ΠΓΕ Μακεδονία wines.
