Terroir
Natural factors
- An east–west syncline measuring 17 km × 3 km, flanked by Urgonian limestone ridges rising to 964 m in the north and 566 m in the south.
- Soils derived from black Albian schistose marls (considered the non-metamorphic equivalent of the Aptian).
- A transitional climate: ranging from a Mediterranean isotherm of 15 °C to the east to cooler western influences at 13 °C, with a mean temperature above 14.5 °C.
- The vineyard spans 4 communes in the Pyrénées-Orientales, planted principally between 140 m and 350 m elevation.
Product characteristics
- Brick- to amber-hued VDN: oxidative ageing through at least 1 March of the third year, capable of developing notes of rancio, dried fruits, or roasted coffee.
- Garnet-style VDN: mutage sur grains yields a deep purple robe, with aromas of spiced red and black fruits; dry red wine: supple tannins, black fruits, and forest-floor notes.
Terroir / wine link
- The black schistose marl soils release the day's stored heat overnight, offsetting nocturnal cool temperatures and promoting full ripeness in the grapes.
