Terroir

• The area comprises four natural landscape units running from south-west to north-east: the Obermosel (Perl to Konz), the Trierer Talweitung (Konz to Schweich), the Mittelmosel (Schweich to Moselkern), and the Unteres Moseltal (Moselkern to Koblenz).
• In the Obermosel and the Trierer Talweitung the river winds through soft Mesozoic rocks such as Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, and Keuper, while in the Mittelmosel and Unteres Moseltal it meanders through a narrow gorge cut into Devonian rocks of the Rhenish Massif.
• The viticulturally used sites along the Moselle, Saar, and Ruwer lie at elevations of approximately 65 to 375 metres above sea level, with the vineyard areas averaging 180 metres above sea level.
• The vineyards are predominantly oriented to the south-east, south, and south-west — approximately 50% — with the vineyard areas across the entire Mosel appellation averaging an aspect of 195 degrees (south-south-west).
• The soils within the Mosel appellation consist of slate along the Saar, Ruwer, Mittelmosel, and Unteres Moseltal, and of Muschelkalk along the Obermosel; one of the steepest vineyards in the world is the Bremmer Calmont, with a slope gradient of approximately 65 degrees. • The small-scale structure and steep gradients limit mechanical cultivation, so the vineyards are maintained with a high level of manual labour, and human influence rests on a centuries-old tradition of viticulture.
