Terroir
Natural factors
- Geologically, the area is built on the sandy-clayey deposits of the Pannonian Sea, overlaid by Quaternary, Pleistocene loess.
- From the mouth of the Kerka to Molnári, the older and younger terrace system of the Mura follows the steep southern edge of the Letenye hills, where young alluvial fans accumulated, mostly of sand and gravel.
- The dominant soil cover of the catchment area is lessivé (clay-illuviated) soil and brown forest soil.
- In terms of relief, the area belongs to the Zala hills, being regarded as their southernmost extension, and it is exactly here that the left-bank plain of the Mura meets the hills.
- The average annual temperature is 10.5–11 °C, and annual rainfall is 750–800 mm in this area characterized by hills along the Mura.
- In the southwestern arc stretching from Dobri to Murarátka, sandstone often also appears in the soil alongside the brown earth and red earth base.
Human factors
- Harvesting may only be done by hand, which both follows local tradition and ensures gentle processing of the grapes.
- Vines used for making single-vineyard wines must be at least 10 years old, since deeper-reaching roots and the yield regulated by older vines can result in more concentrated wines.
Product characteristics
- The white wines are usually full-bodied and concentrated, with an oily texture, and often show a slight minerality as well.
- The siller and red wines are full-bodied and intense in flavor, while the alcohol remains in balance with the acids throughout, thus guaranteeing freshness.
- The wines of the Mura region stand out for their concentration, aroma and flavor intensity, body, and fresh, vibrant acid structure, and generally have a high alcohol content.
Terroir / wine link
- The soil formed by the floodplain of the Mura river lends a mineral character to the wines.
