Terroir
Natural factors
- Pleistocene detrital substrate: proluvial-deluvial sands and gravels covered by loessic deposits, overlying Pliocene marine marls, clays, and sands.
- Dominant soils: leached cernoziomuri (cambic and argillic-illuvial) in the east-central sector, grey soils to the west, with medium-to-light texture.
- Climă temperat-continentală with excessive nuances, influenced by eastern European and Atlantic air masses; mean annual sunshine duration ~2,100 hours.
- Glacis deluvio-proluvial landform, elevation 100–300 m, west-to-east aspect, on the piedmont terrace of the Curvature Subcarpathians.
- Mean global solar radiation >120 Kcal/cm², ranging from 110 (north-facing exposures) to 140 (south-facing exposures); mean annual temperature ~9–10 °C.
Human factors
- Podgoria Odobești is recorded in Dimitrie Cantemir's "Descriptio Moldaviae", ranked third among the country's wine regions.
- In 1456, King Casimir of Poland requested wine from the podgorie from the ruler Petru Rareș, attesting to its historic export trade.
Product characteristics
- White wines with pronounced aroma, bouquet (in aged wines), and gustatory-olfactory harmony, with enhanced color intensity conferred by the heliothermal resources and light-textured soils.
- Pedoclimatic conditions and high soil acidity impart freshness and fruitiness to the wines; sunshine of approximately 2,100 hours per year promotes the concentration of sugars and primary aromas.
Terroir / wine link
- Acidic soil combined with a heliothermal climate yields wines with freshness, fruitiness, and concentrated primary aromas.
