Terroir
Natural factors
- Bedrock: clayey, sandy sedimentary soils, lösz and loam; the limestone massifs of the Villányi Mountains and the Mecsek are also covered by lösz/loam.
- Climate: continental base with a strong mediterrán hatás; mean annual temperature 10–12 °C, >2,000 sunshine hours, ~600 mm precipitation.
- Relief: a hilly landscape bordered by the Duna, Dráva and Balaton; the principal ridges are the Villányi Mountains and the southern slopes of the Mecsek.
- The soil's water-retention capacity ensures a steady water supply to the vines throughout the growing season.
- The combination of calcareous-loessic, clayey, nutrient-rich soils and mediterrán klíma together gives the wines their fruity, elegant acidity.
Human factors
- Serbian settlers introduced Kadarka from the Balkans, while German colonists established Kékoportó in Villány during the 18th-century replanting.
- In the 20th century Kadarka and Kékoportó dominated red-wine production; today Kékfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are the leading varieties.
Product characteristics
- The red wines are Bordeaux-style Cuvée-k aged in new oak barrels; among whites, Olaszrizling, Hárslevelű and Chardonnay predominate.
Terroir / wine link
- Southerly aspect → warmer climate → higher sugar ripeness, medium-to-high alcohol, full body, ripe fruitiness, and pronounced tannin.
