Terroir

• The zone covers all four departments of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in their entirety, plus 6 communes in the Lozère, forming an amphitheatre stretching from the Pyrenees and the Cévennes down to the Mediterranean.
• The soils, whatever their geological origin (from the Primary era to the Quaternary), share common characteristics: dry, stony, low in fertility, well-drained, and conducive to deep root development.
• The Mediterranean climate is characterised by desiccating winds from the north and west (Mistral, cers, and Tramontane) and maritime winds (marin, grec, Espagne) whose humidity moderates the excesses of summer heat.
• Rainfall varies considerably according to altitude and distance from the sea, ranging between 400 mm and nearly 1,000 mm.
• Close to 115,000 hectares of vines are cultivated each year under the IGP Pays d'Oc, out of a total of 240,000 hectares of vineyard in the Languedoc-Roussillon.
