Terroir

• Sub-Mediterranean climate: Atlantic and Mediterranean influence, mild winters, mean annual temperature of 10.5–10.8 °C, 2,000–2,070 sunshine hours per year.
• The lee of the Mecsek mountain range moderates frost risk; on south-facing slopes the growing season is 3–6 days longer than in Kecskemét.
• Pedological diversity: loess, Triassic limestone, Permian sandstone, and Permian clay slate; overlain by clay-illuviated brown forest soils, rendzinas, and chernozems.
• Loess-based brown earths (Ramann type) are mildly acidic, loam-textured soils with good water management; loess subsoils yield richly aromatic, full-alcohol wines.
• Vineyards sit at 110–300 m above sea level, mostly between 180–270 m; a double rainfall maximum (May–June and October–November) with more than 600 mm per year.

• In 1753 the Pécs cathedral chapter replanted Szentmiklósi hill using cuttings and soil brought from Tokaj-Hegyalja — this is likely how Furmint first arrived in the appellation.
• The phylloxera epidemic (1887–93) ended the dominance of Kadarka; Pécs established an American vine nursery in 1888 and a viticultural inspectorate in 1892.

• Red wines grown on loess forest soils show deep ruby colour, fine tannins, structured build, and suitability for extended ageing.
• In white wines, the Mediterranean influence produces rounded, harmonious acidity alongside intense aromatic and flavour compounds.

• Loess soils yield colour-rich, aromatic, full-bodied wines; sandstone soils yield softer, flavoursome wines with occasional almond notes.
