Terroir
Natural factors
- Submediterranean climate: Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, mild winters, annual mean temperature of 10.5–10.8 °C, 2,000–2,070 sunshine hours per year.
- The lee of the Mecsek mountain range moderates frost risk; on south-facing slopes the growing season is 3–6 days longer than in Kecskemét.
- Exceptional pedological diversity: lösz, Triassic mészkő, Permian homokkő, Permian agyagpala; overlain by clay-illuviated barna erdőtalaj, rendzina, and csernozjom.
- Loess-based brown earths (Ramann type) are mildly acidic, loam-textured soils with good water management; wines grown on lösz show rich aromatic profiles and notable alcohol.
- Vineyards sit at 110–300 m above sea level, predominantly between 180–270 m; a double rainfall maximum (May–June and October–November) with >600 mm per year.
Human factors
- 1753: the cathedral chapter of Pécs replanted Szentmiklósi-hegy using cuttings and soil brought from Tokaj-Hegyalja — this is likely the moment Furmint was introduced to the borvidék.
- The phylloxera epidemic (1887–93) ended the dominance of Kadarka; Pécs established an American vine nursery in 1888 and a wine-inspection authority in 1892.
Product characteristics
- Red wines: on loess-derived forest soils, deep ruby colour, refined tannins, structured build, and strong potential for extended ageing.
- In white wines, the mediterrán hatás yields rounded, harmonious acidity alongside intense aromatic and flavour compounds.
Terroir / wine link
- Lösztalaj: colour-rich, aromatic, alcohol-forward wines; homokkő: soft, flavoursome wines with occasional almond notes.
