About Open Wine Map

Reference map of wine appellations, generated automatically from public registers: the EU register of PDOs and PGIs, the national regulators, the Swiss federal repertoire of cantonal AOCs and the UK register of geographical indications.

21 European countries mapped (2,955 entries: 1,673 appellations and 1,282 related denominations). Further iterations will refine data quality and extend coverage beyond the EU, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Browse the full list of appellations: All appellations.

Sources

  • France: INAO specifications (cahiers des charges) and parcel delimitations, IGN commune boundaries.
  • Other countries: the EU register of geographical indications (eAmbrosia) and the product specifications each national regulator publishes; boundaries from official national and regional layers, Eurostat GISCO and Bétard 2022.
  • Grape varieties: VIVC, the Julius Kühn-Institut's Vitis International Variety Catalogue (Röckel et al.), for canonical names and variety numbers.
  • Narrative extracts: Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0), flagged wherever they appear.
  • Basemap: OpenStreetMap and CARTO.

How the map is made

The structured data — name, classification, grape varieties, wine styles, area and boundary — is extracted from the specifications by a code pipeline, with no language model involved: parsers read each regulator's document, grape names are matched against the VIVC catalogue, and boundaries are drawn from the official delimitations and commune outlines. The pipeline is public and the whole map rebuilds from the sources.

Part of the text is produced by language models: the terroir notes are extracted from the regulator's text by Claude, checked against the source by a second Claude model, then translated; the Wikipedia extracts in the grape and style tooltips are translated mostly by Mistral running locally, and some by Claude; the specification summaries are machine-translated. Each item carries its own attribution line in the panel.

Level of detail: below zoom 12, French appellations with an INAO parcel delimitation are drawn as a silhouette of their vineyard, generalised at up to 250 m (a morphological closing of the parcels, with a smaller radius for small appellations); from zoom 12 the parcels themselves are drawn. Every other appellation keeps the same outline at every zoom.

For AI assistants

AI assistants can query the appellations with the same search tools as the map, through the MCP server https://mcp.openwinemap.com/mcp (no authentication; add it as a custom connector).

Does your browser already speak WebMCP? Every page of the map offers it the same tools. If that means nothing to you, never mind: the MCP server above is the one your AI assistant knows how to use.

Privacy

Usage is measured with a self-hosted Plausible instance, which also receives the feedback sent from the cards. It processes no personal data and follows no individual visitor: no cookies, no persistent identifiers, no IP address stored, no cross-site or cross-device tracking — which is why there is no consent banner to click through.

Contribute and follow

Spotted a mistake? Every appellation card ends with “Report a mistake”: one click, no account needed. Issues and pull requests welcome on GitHub.
