Natural factors
- Soils dominated by Löss and Lösslehm; these give rise to Parabraunerden (luvisols), Tschernoseme (chernozems), and Pararendzinen (para-rendzinas).
- Geology at the Haardtrand is heterogeneous: Tertiary sediments, Muschelkalk, Keuper, Buntsandstein, and Rotliegend sandstones are all present.
- Steep slopes of up to 60% gradient in the west (Pfälzerwald/Haardtrand); the average slope across the entire vineyard area is only approximately 4.5%.
- Mean aspect 140° (south-southeast); temperatures increase from west (Haardtrand) to east (Rhine plain).
